In Sunday’s 60-minute show, VP Kamala Harris was asked where Democrats will get the money for proposed economic plans, why the democratic party is extremely slow in passing border measures, and how she would confront Russia on Ukraine, among other questions.
The Democratic presidential nominee’s CBS interview comes amid a media push that is putting Harris in front of friendly interviewers with targeted audiences. Her conversation with “Call Her Daddy” podcast host Alex Cooper aired Sunday. She’ll visit ABC’s “The View,” Howard Stern, and Stephen Colbert on CBS’ “The Late Show” on Tuesday. On Thursday, she’ll attend a Univision town hall.
This slate of interviews could offer the finest chances for surprises and news-making in the next four weeks before Election Day since Harris and Trump have no further debates scheduled.
When asked about President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, Harris said migration is a “longstanding problem” and hesitated to say if officials should have clamped down sooner.
In the beginning, the Biden administration confronted historic Western Hemisphere migration as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Vetoing of the wall construction became a headache for the American authorities due to the attacks across the southern border for the last three years.
Harris indicated the government has not acted earlier because of the recently submitted immigration package to the Congress in March this year as well as because of the Republicans’ refusal to pass a bipartisan border measure after Trump has called on them to vote against it.
Bill Whitaker of CBS asked: “But there was a historic flood of undocumented immigrants coming across the border the first three years of your administration. Since Trump’s past year, arrivals quadrupled. Did you make a mistake loosening immigration policies so much?
“A longstanding issue. And solutions exist. Harris stated that we have provided solutions since the beginning.
Harris declined to comment on the high number of crossings and whether more action should have been taken sooner, emphasizing instead on recent action that has drastically reduced crossings and placing the onus on Congress to act.
Even on this score, it may take Congress’s action to address the issue, according to Ms.
Harris said she would not negotiate the Ukraine war in bilateral with Putin.
There is no moment, as she said for Ukraine to exist but not to decide about its destiny.
Harris said that only Ukraine and UN charter needs to be engaged to stop the fighting.
Vice President evaded asking whether she would back NATO expanding to Ukraine, saying she would “deal with if and when it arrives at that point.”
When the time comes, we will address those issues. Harris said the U.S. supports Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s unwarranted aggression.
“Putin would be sitting in Kyiv right now,” she claimed if Trump were president.
“He says he can end it on day one. Know what that is? The issue is surrender, Harris stated.
Harris met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House last month and reaffirmed her support.
Harris stated, “As I have stated in six previous meetings and throughout Putin’s brutal aggression and war against Ukraine, I support the Ukrainian people. ” I am proud to stand with the people of Ukraine, and I will work to ensure they prevail in this war, to be safe, secure, and prosperous.
Harris and former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney were interviewed at Ripon, Wisconsin, the site of the origin of the Republican Party.
Cheney defeated a primary last year after she voted to impeach Trump and supported the House’s probe into the former president’s role inciting the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, she endorsed Harris and campaigned in the swing state last week.
If you had told me four years ago that our Constitution is going to be under threat and it’s going to be crucial for the parties to come together and support Vice President Harris, I would have taken it.
Harris answered cordially when asked if she could have campaigned with Cheney four years ago. “That’d be great,” Harris remarked, laughing with Cheney. Cheney said, “She’s really diplomatic.
Later, it featured Harris’ running partner, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who was questioned about earlier statements by Republicans and the press after becoming vice president.
He admitted lying about his service record and being in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square upheaval. However, he noted those occasions were “expressing emotion, telling a story, getting a date wrong,” not “a pathological liar like Donald Trump.”
But Walz says Harris advised him to choose his words better. She said, ‘Tim, you know, you need to be a little more careful on how you say things,’” Walz recounted.
After his team consented to the interview, Trump canceled it and scheduled a sit-down at his Mar-a-Lago home, CBS correspondent Scott Pelley reported Monday night at the outset of the nation’s most-watched newsmagazine.
In October 2020, Trump abruptly stopped an interview with “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl after objecting to Stahl’s questions. Last week, Trump told Wisconsin reporters he would “like to get an apology” for the interview before doing another.
In recent weeks, the former president has mostly answered friendly queries, notably Fox News.
If he won’t let your viewers have a serious, thoughtful dialog, question-and-answer session with you, watch his rallies, Harris said Whitaker.
He will talk about himself and his grievances. You won’t hear anything about the listener. You won’t hear about his efforts to unite the nation, she said. And, Bill, that is why I feel in my soul and heart, the American people are ready to move on.”
