Beginning this autumn, Dr Elizabeth Scala, an English professor, will instruct a course titled Literary Contests and Contexts: The Taylor Swift Songbook. The university’s website states that Swift’s songs will now be read aloud together with pieces by literary greats including Chaucer,

Shakespeare, Coleridge, Frost, and Keats. In a Facebook post from May, the university’s English department urged people to “convert that Easter Egg searching and in-depth reading to academic goals. Swift is a gifted composer who is educated and creative, and it was her writing that caught my attention,

” Scala told the Austin American-Statesman. She claimed that Swift’s music was first brought to her by her daughter in November, not long after “Red (Taylor’s Version)” was released. As Scala explains, “I want to take what Swift fans can already accomplish at a sophisticated level,

pull it out for them a little with a new vocabulary, and then show them how, in reality, Swift relies on broader literary traditions in her songwriting. I’ll be demonstrating to kids that the operations and interpretative actions one does while reading her songs are acceptable for all types of writing.

The course will use Taylor Swift’s songs to provide literary analysis and research techniques, which are essential skills for employment. According to the university’s website, these fields include English literature and other humanities fields.

As we practise close and in-depth reading, evaluating secondary sources, and developing persuasive arguments, we’ll focus on Swift’s music and the cultural contexts in which it and her career are situated.

We’ll also consider frameworks for understanding her work, such as poetic form, style, and history among other matters and theoretical issues important to contextualization. Red (Taylor’s Version), Lover, Folklore, and Evermore are some of the course’s foundational works.

Although New York University was the first to develop a course in Swift’s honour, theirs concentrates on the songwriters who influenced her songs and discusses the singer as a music entrepreneur.

Swift was awarded an honorary doctorate in fine arts by NYU earlier this year.
