The Seven Rings of the Dwarves in Lord of the Rings Expounded: All Powers and Effects

Alert: Ahead for The Rings of Power season 2, episode 5 are spoilers!

Starting with the Seven Dwarf Rings, Sauron has formally started distributing his titular rings in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2. Naturally, this is a major component of what viewers have been waiting for in the Prime Video series as this is the first adaptation examining the Dark Lord’s Rings of Power in this manner. The Three Elven Rings, which were not created under Sauron’s direct influence but rather now that the Dwarves have their Seven in Rings of Power season 2, were developed in season 1.

Though Sauron’s Rings of Power have only been brought to life on Rings of Power, fans of the Lord of the Rings films will be familiar with the essence of the Dark Lord’s gifts. Sauron created and handed these rings to those who would assume they sprung from the generosity of his heart. Naturally, they were being misled since the Dark Lord designed his One Ring to control and impact all the others. Regarding the Dwarves, the Lord of the seven clans accepted these presents; but, what actual use did they make?

The Rings of Power, on first glance, enhance the skills of their users. For the Dwarves, this meant that their skills for mining and building grew unmatched. Though Tolkien omitted many details in this regard, Appendix A of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King notes that the Dwarves could multiply everything they mined. As the Seven Hoards were formed, every one of the seven Dwarf tribes prospered.

Rings of Power season 2 delved more into the Seven Rings’ effects. King Durin III developed the capacity for mountain sight down into their depths. He felt, right away, a kind of intuition guiding him toward particular requirements. After the cave-in, he knew exactly where to chisel the stone away to once more highlight Khazad-dûm, and he could see where the most priceless treasures were stashed, just waiting to be taken. Rings of Power makes clear, though, that King Durin’s Ring made him unduly confident. Though he couldn’t see the Balrog buried beneath his feet, he felt the item would alert him of danger.

The Dwarves‘ Seven Rings Corrupt Result of Sauron’s Influence

The Evil of Sauron Was Formulated Within The Rings Themselves.
Sauron distributed his Rings of Power in order to subdue the Middle-earth leaders. According to Lord of the Rings, the Dark Lord subdued the Kings of Men via the Nine Rings, therefore transforming them gradually into his Ringwraiths.

The Seven Dwarf Rings did not, however, work in quite the same manner. This Middle-earth race is famously difficult and tenacious, hence even Sauron’s influence over the Dwarves through their Rings was elusive. Still, his influence had negative effects on the Dwarf Lords, and they gradually became corrupted all the same.

The Seven Hoards grew so large that they attracted monsters like dragons, who took the riches for themselves, hence murdering countless Dwarves.

Though it might have easily been passed off as ambition and ingenuity before the Seven came into effect, dwarves already had a natural form of greed. Once the Lords acquired their Rings, Sauron’s malice progressively deprived them of their capacity for timing. The Seven Hoards grew so large that they attracted creatures like dragons, who took the riches for themselves, hence murdering countless Dwarves. Worse still, the avaricious excavation of Khazad-dûm unleashed an even more terrifying monster—the Balrog of Moria, who would one day murder Gandalf the Grey in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

What transpires to the seven dwarf rings following the rings of power?

Of the Seven Dwarf Rings, the one claimed by King Durin III—which would come to be known as the Ring of Thrór—foci the most in Rings of Power. Though its final fate is yet unknown, this Ring has the longest narrative. Canon claims that it was passed on even after Khazad-dûm fell until it reached Thráin, who Sauron finally captured in search of one of his Seven. After the Dark Lord located two more of the Seven, four were eaten by dragons attracted to the Seven Hoards.

It’s never known what Sauron used the Dwarf Rings he recovered.

In Lord of the Rings, Gandalf was one of the few who knew the fate of the Seven. He told Frodo about the four that had been eaten and explained to Gimli there would be no Ring to find in Moria since he knew it had been reclaimed by Sauron. Still, it’s not known what happened to the three the Dark Lord carried with him toward his demise. Perhaps they were stashed in Mordor. Still, after the One Ring was shattered, their power would have been much reduced.

The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Reveal The Seven’s Effects on Dwarves of Middle-earth
Part of what is so exciting about Rings of Power is that it is a rare opportunity to see the Dwarves of Middle-earth at their best. Khazad-dûm is a place of wealth and glory, but there was no such Dwarf kingdom in The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings. Especially during Bilbo’s story, the Dwarves were exiled and unable to return to their homes, which were overrun by either Orcs or the dragon Smaug. The same is mostly true for The Lord of the Rings. Though the events of The Hobbit saw the Dwarves reclaim some of their wealth, it wasn’t until after the One Ring was destroyed that this race became stable again.

Though the events of The Hobbit saw the Dwarves reclaim some of their wealth, it wasn’t until after the One Ring was destroyed that this race became stable again.

Though Lord of the Rings is set thousands of years after The Rings of Power, the state of the Dwarf kingdoms is a direct result of the events seen in season 2. The Seven Rings helped this race climb to their greatest but also tipped them over the edge. This was the very nature of Sauron’s work. Rings of Power demonstrated that Sauron believed that his evil will and domination would be the salvation of Middle-earth. However, the very nature of his Rings—and the spiteful rage of their master—made that impossible. Of course, Prime Video is only at the beginning stages of this downfall. It can only get worse from here.
