A TikTok conspiracy theory assumes that Kanye West’s infamous 2009 VMA interruption-in which he declared Beyoncé the rightful recipient of the Best Female Video award-was an attempt to keep Taylor Swift from getting too entangled with Diddy.
The theory suggests West saved her from “getting captured” by Diddy, or, at least, this predator preys upon new talent. Though, there is no solid evidence for this theory to be valid.
The theory has spurred online debate, but many others are doubtful. @jxlia_jblk, a TikTok user, wrote, “Maybe Kanye is right about all the Diddy stuff, but he certainly wasn’t protecting Taylor in any way.” The user also said, “What he did to her was, is, and will be very wrong.”
The hypothesis also relates West’s 2016 music video for “Famous” to this concept, stating that the bed in the movie, which includes a Taylor Swift lookalike, is Diddy’s supposed wrongdoing. However, the widely held reason for the VMA disruption is West’s conviction that Beyoncé was worthy of the award.
Well, interestingly enough, it was going to be pretty obvious that the theory would claim because most of the evidence pointed towards the fact that West was only an actor in this situation who wanted to bring across his idea into further Beyoncé’s obvious win and didn’t give much of a care regarding the intentions he may have had for Swift.
It is the tale of how Kanye West went to steal Taylor Swift’s award at the 2009 MTV VMAs, an act that triggered a ten-year feud that dramatically altered the trajectories of both artists’ careers.
However, based on this newly emerging theory, it can be said that the acts carried out by Kanye West that night may have ended up saving Taylor Swift in the end and therefore dramatically changing her career trajectory.
While the contentious episode was perceived as humiliating for Swift at the time, it may have had unintended consequences for her climb to superstardom.
The Incident: Kanye and Taylor
The 2009 VMAs were watershed moments in both Taylor Swift’s and Kanye West’s careers. Swift, then 19, won Best Female Video for her smash song “You Belong with Me.”
Kanye West stormed the stage, grabbed the microphone, and declared, “Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you; I’m going to let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!”
The stunt shocked the audience, angered most of them, and left Swift nearly speechless. Public reaction encompassed criticism from the fans of Kanye, other celebrities, and even a statement by then-U.S.
President Barack Obama, who publicly labeled him to be a “jackass.” At the same time, Swift was depicted as a victim, and she gained tremendous sympathy and support from fans as well as other artists.
The New Theory: Did Kanye’s Interruption Help Taylor?
More than a decade later, though, a theory has emerged that Kanye’s momentous interruption may have been the best thing that ever happened to Swift.
According to this view, the incident rocketed Swift into the public limelight, accelerating her career and solidifying her place as one of the world’s top pop singers. Here’s why this notion has acquired popularity:
Enhanced Public Sympathy and Attention
Taylor Swift was already a well-known country music singer at the time of the 2009 VMAs, but she had not yet achieved the global stardom she now enjoys.
The encounter with Kanye exposed her to a larger audience, including those who were unfamiliar with her music.
Swift became a symbol of a youthful, hardworking musician who had been treated unfairly by a more established and assertive personality, Kanye West.
Swift’s outpouring of sorrow gave her a competitive advantage in the public eye, establishing her as a personable, down-to-earth musician. Many admirers rallied around her, and she received substantial support from those who had never previously heard her music.
This prominence aided her transition from country music to mainstream pop more swiftly than she would have otherwise.
Solidifying her reputation as a fighter
The hypothesis also postulates that Swift’s reaction to the incident helped to create her public identity as a powerful artist who could win every situation. Swift never lost her cool and calm even after the incident.
She did not lash out in public or flaunt public altercations soon after. This makes her far more likable to her fans and still attracts newer ones who are impressed by her temperance during an uncomfortable situation.
Swift delicately addressed the situation in her music throughout the years, including songs like “Innocent,” which she played at the 2010 VMAs.
These moments gave Swift control of the story, demonstrating her ability to transform a terrible experience into creative inspiration and achievement. The interruption may have influenced Swift’s public image as someone who could overcome challenges and still thrive.
Effect on Kanye’s Reputation and Swift’s Growth
While Kanye West received widespread criticism for his conduct at the 2009 VMAs, Taylor Swift’s career skyrocketed in the years that followed the incident.
Some feel that Kanye’s interruption provided Swift with an opportunity to move from a country music sensation to a full-fledged pop star.
Her albums “Speak Now” (2010) and “Red” (2012) represented this transition, demonstrating her flexibility as an artist and establishing her place in the mainstream music industry.
Meanwhile, Kanye West’s public persona became increasingly contentious, particularly in light of future episodes and his well-documented difficulties with mental health. Swift and Kanye’s conflict had simmered for years before resuming in 2016 with the publication of Kanye’s song “Famous,” which included a line about Swift.
Although the issue appears to have never had an ending, Taylor Swift came out more robust with her 2017 album called “Reputation,” which faced their aftermath. The power of talent of Taylor Swift in transforming horrific incidents into a song that hit listeners’ hearts furthered this victory.
Cultural impact and legacy
Almost a decade has passed since the Kanye-Taylor melee in 2009 at the VMAs, and that moment is etched into the pop culture firmament as some sort of watershed moment.
What started off as all-out shock and anger may have inadvertently provided some short-and-long-term gains for Taylor Swift: it allowed her to grow in followership, consolidate into a more defined artist, and take back the lead in the telling of the life story.
The argument is one that makes the point – this does not bring her one step closer to derailing Swift’s career, but it would have catapulted her to superstardom with the spark that may have been provided by Kanye’s interruption.
This single incident may have sealed her career into becoming one of the greatest artists of her generation, bringing her into international prominence and giving her the chance to prove poise under fire.
Career-Defining Moment.
The 2009 VMAs will most certainly come to be remembered as some kind of turning point both in the careers of Kanye West and, ironically, in those of Taylor Swift.
What was then apparently career-ending scandal now arguably helped foster the development of the artist and public figure that Taylor Swift eventually became.
Swift has gone on to prove herself formidable and talented enough to turn misfortune into opportunity. At the very least, though, Kanye’s interventions “saved” her career, even if they did lend a model to it that continues to resonate powerfully with listeners and the music industry.
