However, well-heeled travellers need not worry. On many of its high-value routes, the airline intends to combine its Flagship First and Flagship Business classes into a new Flagship Suites configuration, promising direct aisle access and a privacy door for everyone up front.

As part of the overhaul, American will also update and expand the premium economy cabins on those aircraft, installing new seats with headrest wings for increased privacy.

“At the heart of it all is American Airlines continuing to listen to and receive feedback from our customers,” Julie Rath, America’s vice president of customer experience, told USA TODAY. “Our Flagship Suites that we’re delivering are very much in line with what customers expect in the premium cabin.”

Flagship Suite seats will have privacy doors and direct aisle access for every passenger, as well as more personal space than current Flagship Business class seats. Every new Flagship seat can be converted into a fully-flat bed.

About six years ago, American Airlines became the first U.S. airline to launch a dedicated premium economy cabin on its long-haul aircraft. The company’s decision to refurbish a large number of those seats demonstrates how well liked the class has grown.

The redesigned multi tone upholstery and privacy wings near the headrests may be seen in renderings for the new premium economy seats.

Premium goods are in greater demand, according to Rath. This is a new development in how we truly listen to our customers.

New Boeing 787-9s and Airbus A321XLRs are scheduled to be delivered in 2024, according to American. Its existing Airbus A321Ts, which are now employed in premium transcontinental service, will be refitted to coincide with the airline’s other A320 configurations, while its flagship long-haul Boeing 777-300ERs will be modified later. According to that plan, once the XLRs are delivered, the high-end single-aisle planes will be replaced for service between the coasts.
American will continue to operate its 777-200 and 787-8 aircraft in their current business class and premium economy configurations for the time being.
