Following his pre-interview hat choice last year, the San Francisco 49ers’ Nick Bosa was let off with a $11525 penalty from the NFL, reports an ESPN source.Bosa donned a white hat—with the yellow ‘Make America Great Again’ written on it—after a win against the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 27 to interrupt a post-game interview with teammates of George Kittle, Brock Purdy, and Isaac Guerendo.
Players are restricted from putting a personal message or non-sponsored branding at any time and place where it can be seen at a stadium and TV “at any point throughout a game day, including postgame interviews in locker rooms or on the field.”
On Wednesday, Bosa said that he understood that such a fine is possible but added he would not have any issues with paying the bill. “I don’t think I have one yet, but if it arrives, it arrives.” Bosa quipped. “It was well worth it.” It was after wearing the hat during the postgame interview endorsing former President Donald Trump for the presidency that Bosa headed to the podium for his regular postgame intervention.
For the second time, the reporters questioned Bosa about his decision to wear the hat and later avoided explaining more, saying, “I don’t want to talk too much about it, but I think it is timely.” The 49ers were on the bye after the match against the Cowboys.
Bosa did not respond to media inquiries again until his standard Wednesday press briefing, subsequently to a Tuesday’s election that went to Trump.Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Bosa, who inked a five-year, $170 million contract extension in 2023, suggested yet again that he would not answer questions about his choice of the hat but went on to say that he watched election night and stayed awake for the results.
This still remains my assumption that my stand on discussing it is not going to change in the near future, Bosa noted. “Clearly, the nation spoke. And we got what we got.”
