The International Chess Federation, or FIDE, declared 18-year-old Grandmaster D Gukesh its World Champion in Singapore on Thursday. PM Narendra Modi wished him well. Young Gukesh has created history for winning over the reigning champion of China, Ding Liren, in the match in deciding Game 14. The 18-year-old has been praised by PM Modi on social networking site X, where he referred to Gukesh’s victory as “historic and exemplary.”

“Amazing and historic! Congratulations on your outstanding achievement, Gukesh D. This is the outcome of his unmatched skill, diligence, and unflinching will,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Apart from etching his name in the annals of chess history, his victory has inspired millions of young minds to dream big and reach for the stars. “I hope all the best for him in his future pursuits,” he continued.

With scores level at 6.56.5, Game 14 was going to be another game that ended with a draw. Gukesh had an opportunity to draw level when Ding forgot the plot.

As the 18-year-old secured a historic victory over Ding to become the 18th chess champion in the history of the game, Gukesh was able to deliver on his best when it was all on the line. The official FIDE website mentions that Gukesh is quoted at 7.5 and Ding at 6.5 for the final score.

When 18-year-old Indian Gukesh D became the winner of FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament 2024 in April, he did the history books, by becoming the youngest to challenge Liren for the world crown.

When he was declared as the winner after that victory, Gukesh broke down in tears with an overwhelming emotional response.
