A New York priest who let pop star Sabrina Carpenter film provocative scenes for a music video inside his church has been accused of mismanagement and stripped of his duties. The church’s Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn release said Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello was relieved of “any pastoral oversight or governance role” within the church.
Church authorities launched an investigation after the release of the music video of Carpenter’s hit song Feather, shot inside Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in October 2023.
The Diocese cited the probe as having uncovered other instances of bad governance aside from the questionable music video that outraged some, such as unauthorized transfers of money.
A successor was installed and Mr Gigantiello was relieved of his duties, the statement was quoted as saying.
Mr Gigantiello had lost his administrative powers back in November immediately following the scandal over Carpenter’s video. He was also relieved of raising funds as diocesan vicar for development. Profanity has been printed on a crucifix in images captured from Carpenter’s video and the vicar is also dancing on the altar in a short black dress.
“I am sad to say that investigations conducted by Alvarez & Marsal and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP have found serious violations of Diocesan policies and protocols,” was the quote from Bishop Robert Brennan, cited by the BBC’s media partner CBS News.
The priest made an admission of a “lapse in judgment” in a letter to his parishioners last year when he allowed the film’s crew, which included Carpenter, to shoot inside the church.
He has yet to comment on the claims that led to his termination. On Monday, Bishop Brennan said a more extensive review within the probe found other examples of administrative malfeasance, such as Mr Gigantiello utilizing his church credit card for personal matters.
Bishop Brennan said that, between 2019 and 2021, Mr Gigantiello moved just shy of $2m (£1.5M) in church funds to bank accounts associated with a former employee of New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
The fifth-term Democrat was indicted on five counts of criminal offenses, which included bribery, wire fraud, and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations.
Several investigations have riveted attention on Adams and those in his inner circle, including subpoenas and law enforcement raids and resignations of top officials who jointly helm the city of New York.
Controversy is not new in the entertainment business, and the most recent buzz is about actress and singer Sabrina Carpenter.
Her recent video shooting of a song at the neighborhood church not only sparked interest but also triggered unexpected happenings-replacement of the church priest by another person.
The incident has been pointed out by both fans and opponents as this raises a question on the crossing point of art into the pure religion.
Having chart-topping hits and energy releasing performances, Sabrina Carpenter picked up a very stunning church as the location for the new video of her song. The location fitted the themes of the song with its grandeur scale and tranquility.
But what started out as a creative project soon turned into a dispute affecting the leadership of the church.
According to reports, the music video was shot under the required ecclesiastical authority permits.
Whispers of unhappiness started to circulate the congregation as the music video production came to an end. Particularly one with themes they felt incongruous with the church’s ideals, several members expressed unease at the prospect of their sacred sanctuary being exploited for a commercial venture.
The response became polarized. While some claimed the production violated sacredness, others said it gave the church attention and modern relevance.
Said to be a harmless cooperation, the priest at the center of this scenario approved the music video shoot. Still, some of the church felt his choice was unacceptable. Critics claimed he sold the integrity of the church for financial benefit and publicity’s purpose.
The priest’s leadership came under examination among the mounting opposition. Some saw his choice as a neglect of the sacrosanctness of the chapel. Eventually, the governing body of the church chose to replace him, therefore signifying a major change in the way the institution handled contemporary cultural events.
Carpenter has not spoken formally on the controversy, but sources close to the production team stressed that the film was produced with regard for the location. They stressed that every effort was taken to guarantee the shot followed the terms decided upon in the church.
Sabrina Carpenter’s social media followers have leapt to defend the singer, saying that she cannot be faulted. They point out that her intention was to create art and not stir controversy. Critics counter that performers should be well aware of such implications on religion and cultures in their choices.
This event has revived a more general discussion on the interaction between religious establishments and the artists. From Renaissance artwork to classical music, churches have always been settings for artistic expression.
The conflict resides in juggling respect of holy places with the changing character of art and its settings. While some see such partnerships as chances to modernize and remain relevant, others consider them as a diluting of spiritual ideals.

The experience reminds artists that they need to approach projects with cultural awareness. Art should take into account the values and customs of places even when it flourishes by stretching limits.
