Selena Gomez is speaking candidly about a memorable moment she shared with her longtime friend Taylor Swift during their friendship.
In an interview with iHeartRadio posted to social media on Thursday, March 27, Gomez, 32, recalled when she sang Swift’s, 35, then-untitled hit song, “Lose You to Love Me,” which came out in 2019.
When I was playing her ‘Lose You to Love Me,’ right before it dropped, she and her wonderful mom [Andrea Swift] began crying, and then I began crying,” Gomez explained. “You know, it’s very cute.
In “Lose You to Love Me,” Gomez sings about taking back herself after the breakup of a relationship that was no longer working for her, with fans widely speculating it to be about her relationship with Justin Bieber.
Gomez and Bieber had an on-again, off-again relationship between 2010 and 2018 before he eventually married Hailey Bieber and she started dating Benny Blanco. With Swift the mastermind behind several of the biggest hits in the world, Gomez is not surprising to have respect for the “Bad Blood” singer’s view of her work.
“I consider her opinion to be so high because she’s really straightforward. It is very useful, and I have a lot of love for individuals who are sincere,” Gomez had to say. She also called Swift’s recent shoutout to her after she and Gomez and Blanco released their collaboration album, I Said I Loved You First, “sweet” during the interview.
“I LOVE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH, OH MY GOD.” Swift posted through her Instagram Stories when the album was released last week. The album includes the track “Younger and Hotter Than Me” that fans think might be a reference to Swift.
“For thinking’ you were different / Wish I never loved you,” the lines go. “We’re not getting’ any younger, but your girlfriends seem to.” Sharp-eyed fans noticed the similarities between the lyrics and phrases in one of Swift’s hit songs, “All Too Well.”
“And I was never any good at telling’ jokes, but the punchline goes, ‘I’ll get older, but your lovers stay my age.’” Swift sings on the 10-minute rendition of “All Too Well,” a song widely speculated to be about Swift’s short-lived age-gap affair with Jake Gyllenhaal. (The long version of the Red song released in 2021 on its rerecorded album.)
Gomez and Swift first met in 2008 while they were dating brothers Nick Jonas and Joe Jonas, respectively. “I knew from the moment I met [Selena] I would always stand up for her,” Swift said to The Wall Street Journal in 2020. “I have in my life the capacity to forgive people who have hurt me. But I’m not sure if I can forgive someone who hurts her.”
Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift have one of the strongest and longest-lasting friendships in Hollywood. They have stood by each other during personal and professional ups and downs over the years, frequently displaying their strong bond in public. Recently, Selena Gomez revealed a touching moment she had with Taylor Swift and her mother, Andrea Swift, which left them both crying.

One of the loveliest things about Taylor and Selena’s friendship is the relationship that Selena has with Andrea Swift. Taylor’s mother has been a mentor to both of them, always having something wise to say and encouraging them.
Andrea Swift has been battling cancer for several years, and Taylor has openly spoken about the emotional toll it has taken on her. The love and admiration Selena has for Andrea are evident, and it’s likely that the heartfelt moment Selena recalled was related to this deep connection.
“Taylor’s mom has always been there for me,” Selena once said. “She’s one of the kindest souls I’ve ever met.” It comes as no shock that a heartwarming moment among the three of them would fill them with tears.
Selena and Taylor have been the other’s biggest supporters. Either the support from Taylor for Selena’s music or that of Selena defending Taylor from people who speak ill about her never wavers.
