Bayern Munich eliminated Paris Saint-chances Germain’s of winning the Champions League by defeating the French club 2-0 in the second leg of their last-16 match to advance 3-0 overall.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting gave Bayern the lead on the evening at the Allianz Arena, carrying a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Paris last month, and substitute Serge Gnabry sealed the triumph one minute from time.

With Neymar out due to an ankle injury, Bayern were deserving winners over a lacklustre PSG team. Neither Kylian Mbappe nor Lionel Messi had the desired effect on the game for PSG.

It is the second season running in which PSG have gone out of the Champions League in the last 16, and the fifth time in the previous seven campaigns the Qatar-owned club have failed to advance beyond the first knockout round.

Their defence suffered from injuries, with Nordi Mukiele needing to be replaced at halftime in addition to captain Marquinhos, who had to leave after 36 minutes due to a rib injury.

The French champs might have taken the lead in the first half, but Matthijs de Ligt cleared Vitinha’s shot off the line.

After Marco Verratti was fouled in his own box, Leon Goretzka set up the unmarked Choupo-Moting for an easy goal as Bayern took the lead shortly after the hour mark.

Until Gnabry sealed Bayern’s triumph late on, Sergio Ramos came the closest to bringing the visitors back into the contest.

Jamie Carragher expressed his satisfaction with PSG’s elimination following the match.

“I am. Simply put, I don’t like how everything is set up. It’s just a chaos; it’s not a team. They have lost in the final 16 in five of the last seven years.

The top players in the world were acquired, and they spent more money than anyone. It’s simply fantastic because it conveys the value of working as a team. We adore individuals who work well as part of a team, but Kylian Mbappe needs to quit that squad because it isn’t one.

THE TOTTENHAM TROPHY WAIT LONGERS

For the first time since 2012, AC Milan advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League when the Italian champions held out for a 0-0 stalemate against 10-man Tottenham to win 1-0 on aggregate.

Tottenham’s 15-year trophy drought will continue for at least another season after a swift European elimination and FA Cup defeat.

Tottenham was ineffective in attack and had to play the final 12 minutes with a man down after Cristian Romero was dismissed for two bookable offences. Antonio Conte’s return to the sidelines failed to spur his team into action.

Due to traffic, both teams arrived later than expected, which caused a 10-minute delay in kickoff, although it took much longer for the game to start.

After needing additional time to recover from gallbladder surgery following the first leg, Conte was back in control.

The Italian was agitated as usual and received a yellow card from referee Clement Turpin for his outbursts regarding Clement Lenglet’s booking.

His team lacked the same enthusiasm, though, and Spurs struggled to perform.

At the break, Milan displayed the one instance of creativity appropriate for a Champions League quarterfinal match when Junior Messias was set up by a well-executed free kick, but the Brazilian dragged his shot wide.

Four of Spurs’ previous six games had ended in losses, including an FA Cup loss to second-tier Sheffield United.

The half-time whistle was greeted by a few boos, and the home crowd could not conceal their annoyance.

At the break, Spurs relied on backup goalkeeper Fraser Forster to keep them in the game, but Conte was unable to elicit a response.

Brahim Diaz’s jinking run inside the Spurs area resulted in the only goal of the first leg, as Forster’s outstretched leg redirected the ball to safety.

At least Mike Maignan had to make a save for Spurs 25 minutes from time as he deflected Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s shot.

For the final 20 minutes, Conte took a chance by switching to a forward four, with Richarlison partnering Harry Kane, Dejan Kulusevski, and Son Heung-min up front.

But, Kane continued to receive incredibly little support, and any chance of a comeback for Tottenham vanished with Romero.

The Argentine often treads a delicate line with his discipline and got red for the third time in his Spurs career after lunging in on Theo Hernandez.

In stoppage time, Kane’s header from a free kick from Son was superbly saved by Maignan down to his right.

Milan could have secured victory both on the night and overall, but Sandro Tonali squandered another wonderful opportunity by taking a shot himself with teammates in support before Divock Origi’s attempt rebounded off the post.

Yet, it made no difference since the seven-time European champions hung on to end a more than ten-year wait to get to the last eight.
