On Friday, President-elect Donald Trump said that he trusted Pete Hegseth, but acknowledged that “people were a little bit concerned” over his decision to lead the Pentagon amid a spate of drinking and sexual misconduct allegations.
“It seems that Pete is doing fine at the moment. NBC’s Kristen Welker interviewed Trump in Trump Tower and he said, “I mean, people were a little bit concerned.” He is a young man with an excellent record. went to Harvard and Princeton, actually. Although he did well in both subjects, I think that people are now starting to realize his passion for the military. So we and many others will be working on his nomination.
“I think he will, yeah,” Trump said when asked whether he believes that Hegseth can be confirmed by the Senate. Several senators who have called me call him amazing. The president-elect, however reported that he has yet to get any guarantees on the backroom deals from the senators about his confirmation.
Trump’s public endorsement is only the latest of behind closed-door support for his controversial secretary of defense choice that his supporters have received over several days.
At his Truth Social platform earlier today, Trump insisted the former TV host and military veteran “is doing very well” and that “his support is strong and deep, much more so than the Fake News would have you believe.”
When Welker asked Trump if he was worried about claims of excessive drinking, the nondrinking president responded that he has “spoken to people that know [Hegseth] very well and they say he does not have a drinking problem.”

In addition to strongly defending himself against what he has called baseless accusations, Hegseth has denied any misconduct. He wrapped off his first week of Capitol Hill meetings on Thursday, hoping to bolster support from influential senators who will cast votes on his confirmation.
According to sources close to both men, Trump has told Hegseth that he wants to see him fight for votes in the Senate, and Hegseth has seemed more confident this week as he has spoken with key Republican senators because of the ongoing support.
He used X to thank the president-elect for his support, saying, “Like you, we will never back down.”

Current Ohio senator and vice president-elect JD Vance, who has been speaking to his peers in support of Hegseth, also underscored his support for the defense secretary nominee, saying that he is “fighting” for Hegseth because he will “fight for our troops.”
War-losing people have run the Pentagon for far too long. Pete Hegseth is a man who has served through those wars. “We have his back,” Vance wrote on Friday.
As Hegseth faces a tough confirmation process and growing accusations about his behavior and treatment of women at work, including a 2017 sexual assault allegation that he has denied, public support is the latest sign that Trump allies are working to save Hegseth’s chances.
Responding to requests for more screening, Hegseth’s name was forwarded to the FBI for a background investigation. According to his lawyer Timothy Parlatore, Thursday “received the forms yesterday from the FBI, and we’re working on them right now.”
Some of Trump’s supporters have increased public pressure on senators who have yet to pledge their support for Hegseth. Although Hegseth still needs to pass his confirmation hearing early next year, several close to him think that if he can make it over the next week, he will be Trump’s pick.
But aides and close allies to the president-elect were vexed this week by the buzz that Trump was scouting alternatives to Haley, people said, including Iowa Senator Joni Ernst and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis-both whose votes could potentially be the most crucial for Hegseth’s selection.
On social media Friday, Ernst, who had a meeting with Hegseth earlier this week and is scheduled to meet with him again next week, stated that he ought to be permitted to go with the nomination process to a Senate hearing. “We agree that he should have a fair hearing to present his vision for our warfighters, at the very least,” she wrote on X.
