A'ja Wilson Wins Defensive Player Of The Year

A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces defeats Alyssa Thomas and Breanna Stewart in a closely contested Defensive Player of the Year poll.

The WNBA announced on Tuesday that forward A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces is the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year.

A panel of 56 sportswriters and broadcasters gave the former MVP 20 votes, beating Connecticut Sun forward Alyssa Thomas.

As seen by the votes, Wilson was the leading contender for the prize along with Stewart and Thomas.

The revelation came as a surprise late in the morning, three days ahead of time.

Since training camp, Aces head coach Becky Hammon, who was voted Coach of the Year, has emphasized Wilson as a key component of the team's defensive identity.

Wilson, who is the first Aces player to get the honor, was second in the league in defensive rebounds per game.
