Erik ten Hoag has announced that he did not get on Cristiano Ronaldo in Manchester United's 6-3 defeat at Manchester City for his profession.

The Red Devils were once again humbled at the Etihad Stadium and went into the half-time break 4-0 down for the second time this season.

Erling Holland and Phil Foden both scored hat-tricks for the hosts,

but United pulled one back through Anthony and replace Anthony Martial hit a late brace to make the scoreline look a little more reputable.

Ronaldo was an unused substitute on Sunday and saying after the match, Ten Haag explained that the decision to keep him on the bench was twofold.

"I didn't receive him out of respect for his long profession," Ten Haag said.

"And the other thing is that I have the advantage of being able to bring in Anthony Martial. He must minutes but I don't want to point it out like that."

Ronaldo has begun just three times for United this season, two of them coming in the Europa League.
