Daniel Cormier: Islam Makhachev is the greatest fighter in the world for that weight class

Daniel Cormier was aware before the rest of the world, that fighters such as Khabib Nurmagomedov

The future UFC champion in two divisions, David Aldridge, was a former wrestler who saw many of the athletes from Dagestan's mountainous regions.

Although Dagestan is smaller in size than West Virginia, it produces many of the top wrestlers around the world, including the current No.

Abdulrashid Sadulaev is a two-time Olympic gold medalist as well as a four-time world champion.

Cormier anticipated that Dagestan would also start producing MMA champions.

Nurmagomedov was the dominant force in UFC history and has been regarded as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

Cormier stated that while it is new to the world, it is not new to us. He spoke to MMA Fighting about the talents of Dagestani wrestlers.

"When I won my third place medal at worlds, Russia had perhaps five or six world champs.

They had a [third] place." Many of these guys came from Dagestan. They know how to wrestle. The moment I saw Khabib, then Islam,

I realized that I had seen the Dagestanis start to do mixed martial arts. It's a serious problem. It's exactly what happened."

Nurmagomedov retired with a perfect record of 29-0. However, he has since been a coach to many fighters,

including Makhachev who is now considered one of the top lightweights in the sport.
