Former Trail Blazers and Clippers coach Mike Schuler died at 81
Previous Portland Trail Blazers lead trainer Mike Schuler kicked the bucket on Tuesday, the group reported. He was 81.
Schuler, who also coaches the Clippers, began his NBA career with the New Jersey Nets in 1981 and began training the Trail Blazers in 1986.
In his most memorable season with Portland, he led the team to a 49-33 record and made the playoffs.
Currently, only five mentors have received the honor in the tenderfoot season.
Terry Porter, former Trail Blazers player and NBA mentor, had the pleasure of being trained by Mike.
Mike was a superb mentor who trained his players with a focus on bringing out their best.
It was a pleasure to have him on my team to share his experience, information, and thoughtfulness."
He was supplanted by then-associate Rick Adelman, who instructed the group until 1994.
