The robot was very enthusiastic on stage and aimed at a cost below $20,000.

Musk unveiled a prototype of a humanoid "Optimus" robot that shares some AI software and sensors with its cars' Autopilot driver assistance feature

At the start of Tesla's 2022 AI Day presentation, Musk admitted to having a "guy in a suit" last year but promised something more impressive today.

According to Musk, the prototype can do more than what was shown live, but "it's the first time it's operating without a tether on stage tonight."

Musk estimated that it would cost "probably less than $20,000" and later, during a Q&A session,

explained that Tesla is very good at creating the actuators needed for AI and robotics, based on its experience producing drive units for electric cars.

Musk said it would help bring capable robots into production and start by testing them in its factories.

As he spoke, a team of workers moved a non-walking prototype offstage behind him.
