Outlander's eighth and final season has been formally revealed.

STARZ said on Thursday that it had ordered an additional batch of episodes of its time-travel romance.

Fans of the cinematic adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's book received some unpleasant news.

But there was also good news: STARZ has given the go-ahead for Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a prequel series about Jamie Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie.

Outlander's main coupling teased the series' conclusion in a video that STARZ posted alongside the announcement about the upcoming season.

Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser, adds that "every good story has to end."
