NFL Fans React to Bengals’ Playoff Chances Dimming After Tough Loss to Chargers
The Cincinnati Bengals are on track to miss the playoffs for the second straight season after losing 34-27 to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Three years after their 2021 Super Bowl appearance and two years after losing in the 2022 AFC Championship game, the Bengals have yet to resemble the club that played successfully against the opposition.
The Chargers can thank running back J.K. Dobbins for a game-winning rushing touchdown that extended their lead, forcing the Bengals to score with only 18 seconds remaining.
“A tough loss for the Bengals puts them at 4-7, while the Chargers soar to 7-3. Can the Bengals turn everything around?
Joe Burrow, the quarterback, threw for 28-of-50 passes for 356 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. This was against Justin Herbert, who went superb with 17-of-36 passes for 297 yards, two touchdowns, and one fumble.
Chargers Shock Bengals: Playoff Calculations Take a Hit:
Chargers came out very strong, leading 24-6 at halftime and the Bengals having managed only two field goals and never actually penetrating into the end zone until midway through the third quarter.
Chargers Shock Bengals: Playoff Calculations Take a Hit:
The Bengals stormed back in the third quarter, trailing the Chargers by seven points going into the fourth quarter. Then nobody saw this finish: they tied it at 27-27, sending the Chargers and the NFL fans on overdrive. Still, their early deficit proved to be too much to overcome.
The Bengals managed to recover in the second half, scoring 21 consecutive points in the second half to level the game. However, those losses put the Bengals back pretty bad for the start of the game.
The game was marked by a 97-yard touchdown by Vikings star Justin Jefferson at the midway point of the second quarter. In that, the NFL’s highest-paid wide receiver got behind the 49ers secondary and evaded multiple defenders for the final 45 yards before the end zone.
The Bengals sit two games behind the Denver Broncos for the last Wild Card spot, and the Chargers, now the No. 1 Wild Card seed in the AFC, would be on track to their first playoff appearance since 2022.
After the game, a few die-hard fans on social media caught something that probably was overlooked by all but the most attentive of viewers: the searing speed of back judge Tyree Walton’s feet.
“Idk how I didn’t notice this but bro look at the ref running 4.2 40 speed,” one posted. “Yo actually get this dude a contract LMFAO.”
“Tell bro to throw on a jersey and pick up some coverage,” another fan posted.
“The hip flip THEN the stop on a dime,” one wrote about Walton’s agility.
Jefferson finished with the most receptions for the game at four, had 133 yards receiving and the TD. The Minnesota Vikings will host the Houston Texans (2-0) in Week 3.
Despite their thrilling try at returning, fans took to social media to direct their frustration at Burrow and the Bengals for this lackluster season after their seventh loss of the season.
The Bengals head into a bye week, while the Chargers will face off against the 7-4 Baltimore Ravens at home next Monday.
Whoever is to Blame? Breaking Down the Collapse of Bengals vs Chargers:
The bruising loss to the Los Angeles Chargers certainly must have really hurt the playoff hopes of the Cincinnati Bengals going forward. But as the fan base dissects the game, it is fairly natural that many questions will arise as to who shall bear the blame for the stumble. Was it shoddy coaching decisions? Were there underwhelming player performances? Or lack of execution in key moments?
Whoever is to Blame? Breaking Down the Collapse of Bengals vs Chargers:
1. Offense:
Joe Burrow and the offense never really found a rhythm and had some missed opportune moments in the red zone. Was it protection up front, or were the receivers not showing that separation?
2. Defensive Miscues:
The defense surrendered too many crucial big plays, so the Chargers maintained momentum. Might problems with coverage or tackling have subtly changed how things played out?
3. Coaching Decisions:
Zac Taylor’s play calling is through the lens of crunch time. Are there missed opportunities for bolder, game-changing strategies in crunch time?
4. Impact by Special Teams:
Special teams mistakes also contributed, with a missed field goal that might have changed the tide of the game. Is the pressure getting to the unit?
Fan Reactions:
Social media has been aflame with theories and debates, with some fans calling for more accountability from the players as well as the coaching staff.
