Bret Michaels’ Dedication to Military Veterans – How He Honors Troops at Every Concert

Anytime Bret Michaels is behind a microphone, expect him to recognize military members in the audience.

The Poison leader, who tours frequently with his solo act for what he terms Parti Gras performances, always devotes a few minutes to expressing his admiration for active troops and veterans before singing Poison’s emotional 1990 ballad, “Something to Believe In.”

Michaels’ father, Wally, was a Navy veteran, and members of his family have military experience. Michaels also works frequently with Operation Homefront, which offers support to military families.

“We discovered we appreciate the freedoms and opportunities we have because of the sacrifices of many.”

“The freedom of opinion, the freedom to choose what religion we practice … that’s a great feeling and I have been in some places that don’t do that.”

Besides advocating for the military, Michaels‘ Life Rocks Foundation assists children with diabetes. The rocker himself has had Type 1 diabetes since he was a child and is a strong supporter of individuals with the condition.

“I never complained about getting older,” Michaels, who reached age 62 March 15, “because I’ve lost so many friends who never got the opportunity.”

Michaels will be touring all summer beginning April 11, and is publishing a photo journal, “Then, Now and Forever,” in the fall.

The tireless rocker will blow through a treasure trove of Poison hits (“Talk Dirty to Me,” “Unskinny Bop,” “Every Rose Has its Thorn”) at his upcoming amphitheater and theater dates; share the stage with Alice Cooper, Shinedown, Nickelback and others at the May 18 Boardwalk Rock festival in Ocean City, Maryland; and reunite with friends Def Leppard for June and July dates between his own.
