The NFL’s Highest Paid Players record-breaking contract offseason, Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions 2024:

According to data tracked by Spotrac, an NFL offseason that awarded a record $12.4 billion in new contracts set or tied the high for average yearly deal value at 13 different positions.

That amount was $2 billion more than the record set in 2022. Football trailblazers include right tackle Penei Sewell of the Detroit Lions, who will average $28 million, and left tackle Tristan Wirfs, who is expected to earn $28.1 million with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs raised the salary cap for defensive tackles to $31.8 million, but Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings, a wide receiver, is now the highest paid player who is not a quarterback at $35 million.

There are many people on the list and a sizable sum of money. However, this season, being paid a record amount does not ensure a place among the top 10 NFL players.

Nine elite quarterbacks are vying for that title, with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce coming in at number seven with an estimated $52 million, and Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff leading the pack with an estimated $85.6 million from his playing contract, endorsements, and other business ventures.

Before taxes and agent fees, the top 10 players are expected to earn a combined $644 million in the 2024 league year, smashing the previous record of $508 million.

The entire amount is more than twice as much as the top 10 earned a mere seven years prior, when the list from 2017 brought in a total of $296 million. The top 10 this year have a cutoff of $47 million, which is 15% more than the record $41 million from 2023.

There are at least nine quarterbacks on the list for the third consecutive year, and since 2018, there have been no less than seven. Thanks to a staggering $35 million in anticipated off-field income—the highest amount of any player not named Tom Brady in the 15-year history of Forbes’ ranking—Kecle stands out as the only exception.

(According to estimates from Forbes, Brady earned at least $44 million off the field in each of his final two years with the Buccaneers.) The majority of Kelce’s income will come from the New Heights podcast that he co-hosts with his brother, retired center Jason Kelce of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The two of them signed a three-year contract in August to co-host the show with Wondery on Amazon for a minimum of $105 million over three years.

This quickly ends Patrick Mahomes’s one-year reign as football’s off-field king, which he shared with colleague Travis Kelce of the Chiefs. With an estimated $25 million in off-field earnings,

Mahomes is still head and shoulders over the rest of the league despite having lucrative endorsement deals with Adidas, State Farm, and Subway. According to  predictions, none of the other players in the top 10 for overall profits anticipates making more than $10 million from the game this year.

As teams’ income climbs, rising 8% year over year to an average of $630 million last season, according to  calculations, the true boost to NFL players’ pay is occurring on the field.

The wage cap is rising to $255.4 million this season, an increase of $30 million over 2023, as a result of the league’s collective bargaining agreement, which guarantees players at least 48% of all revenue.

This gives front offices more spending power. Take a look at wide receivers, for example. Spotrac data shows that 10 of the top 15 contracts for the position and the top five contracts ever assessed by average yearly value were inked in the last six months.

This offseason, Green Zone players:

At twelve different positions broke NFL records for the highest average annual value of their contracts, while two quarterbacks tied Joe Burrow’s record from the previous season. Here is the high scorer.

Of course, an NFL player’s real compensation might fluctuate greatly over the course of a year, regardless of the average annual worth of their contract. For example, quarterback Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers received an unprecedented signing bonus of $75 million in cash up front, which vaulted him to the third spot on the earnings chart with $80.5 million in total for 2024.

However, it is said that his on-field salary will decrease to $13 million the following year before skyrocketing to $51 million in 2026.

Although Love’s $55 million is comparable to Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins, their respective average annual values of $55.1 million and $555 million, respectively, fall short of the top 10 for 2024 due to a different incentive structure.

Jared Goff:

Following his leadership led the Lions to their first postseason trip in seven years, Goff was awarded a four-year, $212 million contract extension in May, which included a no-trade clause and $170 million in realistic guarantees. For two months, his $73 million signing bonus was the most in the NFL until Jordan Love of the Packers surpassed him with $75 million.

Goff endorses products for companies like Ford, Old Spice, and, fittingly, Jared jewelers to augment his income, and it seems he knows how to spend it:

According to research by luxury real estate firm RubyHome Northwest, he paid $10.5 million and $8.6 million, respectively, for two nearby homes in Manhattan Beach, California, last year, making it one of the most costly real estate deals by a sports celebrity in 2023.

Patrick Mahomes:

The 10-year, $450 million contract that Mahomes signed in 2020 remains, in terms of total value, the highest in NFL history. Mahomes turns 29 this month. But ten quarterbacks currently have higher annual averages than he does, thus he has been overtaken.

Although he isn’t demanding a raise, Mahomes is pursuing his fourth Super Bowl championship overall and his third consecutive year as a starter for the Chiefs. Reacting to the massive agreements for young talents Jordan Love and Tua Tagovailoa, Mahomes told USA Today in July that “it’s awesome for the game of football”.

“I’m managing fairly well on my own.” Mahomes has the finest portfolio of traditional endorsements in sports, including a deal, so he can definitely afford to adopt that giving mindset.

Jordan Love:

Love, who was selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, spent three seasons in Green Bay as Aaron Rodgers’ backup quarterback before becoming the team’s main quarterback in 2023 and throwing for 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns.

The bar is set considerably higher for his follow-up campaign: Love moved up 13 spots from 2023 to 14th place among quarterbacks in an Athletic survey of coaches and executives.

He was voted 34th overall in the NFL Network’s Top 100, an annual poll of active players. As the Packers did in July, giving a guy with 18 career starts a four-year, $220 million contract is hazardous; nevertheless, keep in mind that Rodgers had just seven when Green Bay granted him a five-year agreement in 2008.

Joe Burrow:

Burrow into this year’s earnings top 10 largely due to a $55 million option bonus given during the summer. Burrow inked a five-year, $275 million agreement with the Bengals last September.

Burrow’s 2023 season was cut short due to a wrist injury, but he told Sports Illustrated recently that he took the time off to gain muscle.

In addition to walking in the Vogue World 2024 fashion show with his college teammate Justin Jefferson, the quarterback with an apparently endless list of nicknames—including Joe Cool, Joe Brrr, and Joe Shiesty—also switched one high-profile sponsorship from Nike to Alo Yoga, helping the company launch its first running shoe in August.

Justin Herbert:

Similar to Burrow, Justin Herbert signed a huge new deal in 2023 that included a sizable option bonus in the 2024 offseason. The deal was a $50.6 million bonus attached to a five-year, $262.5 million agreement. In addition, he is owed a further $45 million in bonuses by 2025.

The young Chargers star passed Peyton Manning’s 16,418 passing yards in his first four seasons with 17,223 passing yards, making him the fastest player in NFL history to reach the milestone. In November, he completed his 1,500th completion in his 57th career game.

A rising sensation off the field, Herbert has made appearances in ads for SoFi, TCL, and Dr. Squatch soap.

Kirk Cousins:

Following six seasons and three Pro Bowl appearances with the Minnesota Vikings, Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million free-agent contract in March to join the Atlanta Falcons, taking the place of quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke and Desmond Ridder.

While Michael Penix Jr., the quarterback from University of Washington, was selected by Atlanta eighth overall in the April draft, complicating matters further, Cousins has publicly maintained a conciliatory tone and stated that, even after suffering an Achilles tear that ended his 2023 season, winning a Super Bowl is still his ultimate goal.

Outside of football, Cousins collaborates with ten businesses, including as Truist Bank (whose name graces the nearby home of MLB’s Braves) and Mercedes-Benz (the naming rights sponsor of the Falcons’ stadium).

Travis Kelce:

According to an annual NFL Players Association filing with the U.S. Department of Labor, Kelce’s fame reached a new level after he started dating billionaire pop star Taylor Swift last year.

This helped him earn $2.4 million from jersey sales, video games, and other group licensing income over the 12 months that ended in February—the fourth-best total in the league.

In addition to playing in the Ryan Murphy-produced FX comedy Grotesquerie, Kelce will now host the 20-episode game show Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? on Prime Video, which will debut in October.

In the meantime, it has been claimed that Kelce will feature in the upcoming action-comedy Loose Cannons, which is also expected to feature a sequel to Adam Sandler’s 1996 blockbuster Happy Gilmore. Additionally, Kelce and his brother Jason.

Aaron Rodgers:

After rupturing his Achilles tendon in the September opener against the Buffalo Bills, Aaron Rodgers’ first season with the New York Jets lasted just four snaps. However, he returned to practice 77 days after surgery, recovering months ahead of schedule for any professional athlete.

In anticipation of 2024, when he might become the ninth NFL quarterback with at least 60,000 passing yards in his career, Rodgers and New York agreed to a restructured two-year contract that included a $75 million fully guaranteed guarantee.

This reduced Rodgers’ income for 2024 and 2025 by around $35 million combined. Nevertheless, the agreement will surpass Tom Brady’s previous NFL record of $333 million by raising Aaron Rodgers’ career on-field earnings to $418 million. Rogers
