The president is calling it “the storm of the century,” and vice president Kamala Harris and president Joe Biden warned the public on Wednesday. Hurricane Milton is raging in Florida.
“We have your back, for the people of Florida and all the states affected,” Vice President Biden said from the White House Roosevelt Room. Has rebuilt Kamala and me always. We’ll remain once everything vanishes. He also described storm response false information as “un-American.”
The severity of the storm, the government’s attempts to debunk false information regarding the federal response to disaster Helene, and the approaching election that increases the stakes for a competent government response help Biden and Harris strive to get ahead of this newest disaster.
During a televised briefing with officials from the National Weather Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, both leaders took part in the briefing and asked questions. Biden showed up in person from the White House, while Harris joined the briefing remotely from New York, where she had stayed overnight after taking part in a series of interviews. Following that, the Vice President called into CNN and the Weather Channel for interviews regarding the storm. During one of the interviews, he told Dana Bash of CNN that it is “unconscionable” for leaders to provide false information about hurricanes.
There were at least three separate occasions on Wednesday when Vice President Biden addressed the American people regarding his administration’s response to the hurricane. These occasions included the briefing, a call with rabbis in which the president made reference to the hurricane, and separate remarks on Milton later in the afternoon from the Roosevelt Room of the White House. Biden postponed his trip to Germany and Angola, which was scheduled to take place this week.
In the later hours of Wednesday, the White House announced that Vice President Biden had a phone conversation with many officials in Florida prior to Hurricane Milton making landfall.
The public face that Harris assumes in the storm response falls during a period when Hurricane Helene and now Milton have entered into the 2024 election. There are fewer than four weeks until Election Day when this is happening.
From her formal role as vice president, she has been issuing statements on issues outside the ambit of her usual responsibilities in administration. For instance, a release from his office yesterday cautioned that anyone who manipulated prices during the storm “will be held accountable.” Americans were also reminded that Harris, as Attorney General of California and Senator of the United States Senate, has consistently been one of its fiercest warriors in the war on prices.
That’s why I call it hazardous, Harris said. It’s unconscionable, to be honest, for anyone who would consider themselves a leader to deceive desperate people to the point where those desperate people would not receive the relief to which they are due. She was referencing remarks made by late President Donald Trump and his advisers on how the federal government lacked means of assistance. “And we all know that it is a gamble; the gamesmanship must come to an end at some point; the politics must also end, particularly in the circumstances we find ourselves in.”
She praised the local government. Locals shouldn’t be afraid to ask for assistance or be ignorant of their rights, the speaker stated. “It is not in the best interest of the people to not come forward and ask for assistance.”
She stated on ABC’s “The View” at the beginning of the week that Trump “really lacks empathy,” and her team released an online advertisement attacking Trump’s response to natural disasters.
In the days since disaster Helene, her campaign has scrambled to evacuate workers, halt voter outreach across Florida, and monitor early voting repercussions in battleground North Carolina. A hotline with hundreds of operators has been established by the campaign in order to provide answers to queries that voters may have regarding how to register to vote, vote in person, or vote by mail. This is particularly important in light of the fact that polling places in western North Carolina have been altered as a result of the storm, according to officials.
While that’s a deeply political ceremony, Vice President Biden also seized on the storm briefing Wednesday to denounce President Trump for what he called “an onslaught of lies” and to denounce Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia for spreading misinformation.
Several assertions have been made regarding the confiscation of their properties. Simply put, it is not the case. They are stating that anyone who have been affected by these storms would receive a cash payment of $750, and nothing more. Simply put, it is not the case. Biden stated that Greene’s argument that the government has the ability to regulate the weather is “beyond ridiculous.” He also stated that it is not true to say that the money that is needed for this problem is being redirected to migrants, which is a ridiculous thing to say.
Although it is only a matter of days since the horrific destruction caused by Hurricane Helene throughout the Southeast had all towns in its path scrambling to recover, the administration is steeling itself for the possibility of an unparalleled magnitude of disaster.
There may be up to 18 inches of rain and storm surges that can reach up to 15 feet in height. The winds will be extremely strong, hitting well over 100 miles per hour. In the course of the briefing, Vice President Biden stated that it appears to be the storm of the century.
Many communities in the path of Hurricane Milton haven’t had a chance to catch their breath between Helene and Milton, two historic storms in two weeks,” Vice President Biden said before those calls to citizens about paying attention to evacuation advisories.
“Although I recognize that leaving your home, possessions, and all of your assets behind is incredibly tough, I kindly ask everyone in the hurricane’s path to follow all safety precautions during the course of the next 24 hours. It really is a matter of life or death in the scenario we are discussing.
